Pest Prevention Tips

purge-pestsIt’s hard to imagine how something so tiny can do so much damage, but these pint-sized problems are certainly capable of large-scale destruction. Here are tips on protecting your home from pests.

Carpenter Ants and Termites — Sprinkle boric acid where you see these pests in and around your home; over time, it will spread to the entire colony. However, a serious infestation will likely require professional pest control. Once you get rid of them, make sure they don’t return by safeguarding your home against moisture.

Raccoons and Squirrels — Remove temptation by keeping garbage secured in a lockable, chew-proof container, and check your attic and basement for holes that provide easy access to a pest looking for a cozy place to sleep.

Mice and Rats — Avoid leaving food out on kitchen counters or in pet bowls as food can attract rodents. Watch for signs of rodent visitors and if you notice anything, set out traps to rid your home of them before a few turn into many.

Cockroaches — Remember to remove their sources of food (crumbs and sticky spots on floors and countertops) and water (leaks) so they will readily eat the cockroach bait you set out for them.

Dry Rot — Prevent fungi from destroying the strength and integrity of your wood supports and walls by controlling the interior humidity of your home and fixing leaks immediately.

Moths and Carpet Beetles — Keep clothing and carpets clean and free of food spills or other attractive scents, and frequently launder clothes and vacuum carpets. To treat infestations, do a thorough clean, and find a natural or commercial deterrent.
